Starting a new job in logistics or industrial work can feel overwhelming. Whether it’s a busy warehouse, a transport hub or a fast-paced depot, new starters often face unfamiliar systems, people and expectations. A clear and supportive onboarding process helps people settle in faster, perform better and stay longer.

Here’s how Bluestones Supply Chain recommends making onboarding a success, especially in supply chain settings where fast integration really matters.

Make contact before day one

Good onboarding starts before the first shift. A quick call, a welcome email or a clear explanation of what to expect helps remove uncertainty. It shows you are organised, professional and glad to have them on board.

For temporary or shift-based workers, this is even more important. Let them know start times, PPE requirements, who to report to and what to bring. First impressions start here.

Give a warm and practical welcome

First days in industrial or logistics jobs can be intense. Help new hires feel comfortable by giving a proper introduction to the site, team and daily routine. Walk them through health and safety procedures, break times and where to find support if they need it.

Even if they are only on a short contract, feeling part of the team boosts engagement and performance from day one.

Get the basics right

Turning up to find no login, no access or no uniform is frustrating and unprofessional. Make sure all the basics are sorted ahead of time. That includes clock-in processes, equipment access, security checks and site-specific rules.

At Bluestones Supply Chain, we help our clients coordinate this behind the scenes so new starters can hit the ground running.

Explain how your workplace operates

In logistics environments, every site runs slightly differently. New hires need to understand the specific pace, expectations and procedures of your operation. Do not assume they will know what is expected right away.

Take time to explain how the team works together, how performance is measured and how things like breaks or shift swaps are handled. It helps avoid confusion and supports a safer, more productive site.

Keep support going past day one

Onboarding does not end after the induction. Especially in roles with physical demands or technical processes, people need time to adjust.

Check in after a few days, and again after the first week or two. Ask how they are getting on, if they understand the role and if they need help with anything. Even temporary staff appreciate being treated like part of the team.

Ask for honest feedback

Every new starter brings a fresh perspective. Ask what was clear, what was not and what could have made their first few days easier. Use that insight to improve your onboarding process over time.

The better your onboarding gets, the more confident and capable your team becomes.

Why onboarding matters in logistics

In logistics and industrial work, staff turnover can be high and productivity depends on people settling in quickly. A well-structured onboarding process reduces early no-shows, improves safety and increases loyalty, even in short-term contracts.

At Bluestones Supply Chain, we work with clients to design onboarding plans that are clear, fast and practical for the environments you operate in.

Need help improving your onboarding process?

We support businesses across the UK supply chain sector with recruitment and onboarding strategies that reduce turnover and boost site performance. Whether you are hiring one new starter or fifty, we can help you get them off to the best possible start.

Get in touch with Bluestones Supply Chain and let’s make onboarding work for your team.

The UK logistics sector is changing fast. From automation and AI to shifting workforce expectations and regulatory updates, the way businesses manage recruitment is evolving. In 2025, future-proofing your supply chain workforce is no longer optional. It’s essential for staying efficient and competitive.

Here’s how to do it the right way.

Understand what’s changing and why it matters

Technology is reshaping warehouse and transport operations. From handheld systems to digital scheduling and eco-logistics requirements, today’s roles are more complex than ever. You don’t just need people who can lift and drive. You need candidates who are tech-literate, adaptable and proactive.

At Bluestones Supply Chain, we help clients anticipate these changes and connect them with people who are already working in this new reality.

Make flexibility part of your core strategy

Rigid staffing models don’t work in a volatile market. Seasonal peaks, last-minute absences or increased customer demand can disrupt even the most organised operations.

Flexible recruitment gives you control. Whether you need temporary support for a few days or a full shift team for a new contract, we provide access to experienced workers who are ready to step in and perform from day one.

Hire the right people, not just the available ones

It’s not just about filling shifts. The quality of your hires affects your team performance, your brand reputation and your long-term efficiency.

We focus on finding candidates with the right skills and mindset. People who turn up on time, follow processes, work safely and adapt when needed. These are the workers who help your business grow.

Build internal resilience with upskilling and cross-training

When workers can take on multiple responsibilities or switch roles when needed, your business becomes more agile. Cross-training your team also helps reduce reliance on agency staff and protects your operation from sudden staff shortages.

We can advise on how to find candidates who want to grow and how to structure your teams for long-term adaptability.

Keep compliance simple and stress-free

In logistics and industrial recruitment, compliance is everything. From right-to-work checks and licences to working time rules and health and safety, the risks are real.

Bluestones Supply Chain manages the entire compliance process. Every candidate we place is fully screened, verified and onboarded to meet your site standards. That means fewer delays, less paperwork and lower risk.

Think ahead, not just in emergencies

Many businesses wait until they’re short staffed before they start recruiting. That can lead to rushed decisions and the wrong hires.

Instead, we help you build a proactive talent pipeline. A pool of vetted, qualified candidates who are ready to go when you need them. That reduces hiring time and keeps your operation running smoothly.

Choose a recruitment partner who understands your world

Working with a sector specialist makes a real difference. We understand logistics roles, peak season pressures, licensing rules and client SLAs. That means faster placements, better communication and fewer mistakes.

We don’t send generic CVs. We match people to your operation based on real understanding of what makes your site work.

Final thoughts

The supply chain industry is moving fast. To keep up, your recruitment strategy needs to be smart, flexible and forward thinking. Whether you need drivers, pickers, planners or warehouse managers, we can help you build a workforce that’s ready for whatever comes next.

Talk to Bluestones Supply Chain today and let’s build a stronger team for 2025.

Choosing a career as an HGV driver can offer much more than just a steady income. One of the biggest advantages is the flexibility that many driving jobs provide, allowing you to balance your work commitments with your family life and personal needs. In today’s fast-paced world, finding a role that fits around your lifestyle is essential, and driving can be an ideal solution.

Unlike typical nine-to-five office jobs, many driving roles come with varied shift patterns, including early mornings, evenings, nights, or weekends. This means you can often find shifts that suit your family commitments or childcare arrangements. For parents or carers, this flexibility makes it easier to plan your day and spend quality time with your loved ones without compromising your career.

Moreover, some driving positions involve local or regional routes rather than long-haul journeys. These roles typically mean less time away from home and more predictable schedules. Having a shorter commute and returning home daily can reduce stress and improve your work-life balance significantly. For those who value regular family meals, attending school events, or simply being present for important moments, flexible driving jobs provide the chance to stay connected while maintaining a fulfilling career.

Another benefit is the ability to enjoy periods of time off between shifts. Many drivers have days or even weeks free depending on their contract type, which can be used to rest, pursue hobbies, or spend time with friends and family. This rhythm of work and rest is highly valued by many in the driving community and helps prevent burnout, making it easier to sustain a long-term career in logistics.

At Bluestones Supply Chain, we understand how important flexibility is to our candidates. That’s why we work closely with employers to find driving roles that offer varied schedules and conditions tailored to different lifestyles. Whether you’re seeking full-time work with predictable hours, part-time positions, or weekend shifts, we are here to help you find a job that fits your needs.

Our recruitment experts also support drivers at every stage of their career, whether you’re just starting out or are an experienced professional looking for a change. We know the supply chain industry inside out and can match you with employers who value flexibility as much as you do.

If you want a career that balances work and family life, consider HGV driving as a rewarding and flexible option. Get in touch with Bluestones Supply Chain through our contact page to explore available opportunities. Let us help you find a role that works for you and supports the life you want to lead.

The UK logistics sector is facing an ongoing shortage of qualified HGV drivers, making it an excellent time to consider a career in this essential and rewarding industry. HGV driving offers great job security, competitive pay, and a level of independence and variety that few other roles can match. If you’ve been thinking about becoming an HGV driver but aren’t sure where to start, this guide will walk you through the key steps.

Before you can get behind the wheel of a heavy goods vehicle, you need to hold a full UK car driving licence. After this, the next step is to apply for a provisional HGV licence. You will need to complete a D2 application form and a D4 medical form signed by a registered medical professional. Both forms can be requested from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA). Many candidates choose to arrange their medical privately to avoid delays.

Once you have your provisional licence, you’ll need to pass the HGV theory test. This is split into two parts: multiple choice questions focused on road safety, vehicle regulations, and driving theory; and a hazard perception test designed to assess your ability to recognise and react to developing dangers on the road. Preparing thoroughly for these tests is important, as passing them is a requirement before moving on to practical training.

Practical driver training will be the most hands-on part of your journey. You will learn how to manoeuvre large vehicles safely, carry out daily vehicle safety checks, understand regulations such as hours of service and load securing, and develop essential skills such as reversing and parking. The duration of training can vary, but many candidates complete it within a few weeks.

Passing the practical driving test will earn you a full Category C or Category C+E licence, which qualifies you to work as a professional HGV driver. From there, a variety of employment opportunities open up, including roles with logistics firms, haulage companies, and industrial clients across the country.

Bluestones Supply Chain specialises in connecting qualified drivers with the right opportunities. With over 30 years of experience in supply chain recruitment, we understand the challenges both drivers and employers face. Whether you are a new driver or someone returning to the industry, our team can support you through the job search and help with the necessary registration and compliance processes. We work with a wide network of employers, ranging from small local businesses to major national companies, ensuring you’ll find a role that fits your lifestyle and career goals.

Our personalised approach means we’re on hand to answer your questions about pay rates, shift patterns, locations, and progression opportunities. We want to make your transition into HGV driving as smooth and rewarding as possible.

If you’re ready to start your journey and join the growing number of professional drivers helping keep the UK moving, get in touch with Bluestones Supply Chain today. Let us help you find your perfect role in this vital industry.

As the UK accelerates its transition to cleaner energy, the road haulage and logistics sector is increasingly under pressure to adapt, and electric fleets are quickly moving from concept to reality.

Fleet electrification has already gained serious traction, with major players like BT Group committing to massive EV rollouts. By 2027, BT plans to operate 8,000 electric vehicles, nearly a third of its total fleet, highlighting a broader industry shift that goes beyond ticking sustainability boxes. It’s about gaining a competitive edge, cutting long-term costs, and aligning with national decarbonisation goals.

At Bluestones Supply Chain, we’re closely watching this momentum and the conversations surrounding what electrification means for hauliers, couriers, and distribution businesses, especially those managing large or long-haul fleets. While the government’s 2030 petrol and diesel sales ban doesn’t yet apply to HGVs, many within the sector agree it’s only a matter of time.

Driving factors behind the shift

The rise in EV adoption is being fuelled by several key factors. Battery technology has improved drastically, enabling longer distances without a significant increase in size or weight. Meanwhile, modern electric hydraulic systems, proportional valves, and power-on-demand innovations are helping electric lorries rival their internal combustion engine (ICE) counterparts in both performance and reliability.

There’s also an economic argument. Electricity remains more affordable than diesel, especially when vehicles are charged during off-peak hours. Fewer moving parts in EVs mean fewer breakdowns and lower maintenance costs over time, a win for both fleet uptime and budgets.

But challenges remain

Cost remains the biggest barrier. EVs are still around 25 percent more expensive than petrol or diesel equivalents, and charging infrastructure, especially for depots handling multiple vehicles, requires investment. Range anxiety also persists. Government data shows that most commercial EVs currently travel between 100 to 300 miles per week, which might suit local delivery but not longer haulage runs.

Sustainability starts before the switch

A full switch to electric may not be viable for every logistics provider just yet. But that doesn’t mean fleets can’t start making sustainable changes. Many industry leaders are now focusing on route optimisation, telematics, and smarter scheduling to reduce emissions today while preparing for electrification tomorrow.

A recent survey found that while 87 percent of fleet owners aim to go electric by 2030, less than half feel highly prepared to do so.
When DGG Transport landed a major new contract with a national home improvement retailer, it was a big win – but it also came with a big ask. They needed to expand their driver team quickly across multiple sites, looking for over 20 experienced Class 1 and Class 2 drivers, and it wasn’t just about numbers. These drivers had to have clean licences, digital tachograph experience, and in many cases, ADR certification for hazardous goods. Finding that many qualified drivers on such short notice is no small task, especially in a market already stretched thin.

That’s where we came in.

Thanks to our deep experience in the logistics space, we knew exactly where to start. We reconnected with drivers in our network who had previously expressed interest in coming back under the right circumstances. We also reached out directly to our trusted pool of past placements – drivers we knew had the right qualifications and a solid track record.

Alongside that, we launched a targeted social media push to get the word out fast, focusing on what we knew drivers were really looking for: steady hours, fair pay, and a supportive environment. We also introduced a driver referral scheme, which helped bring in several excellent candidates we might not have found otherwise.

We worked closely with DGG throughout, holding regular check-ins and suggesting flexible start dates and shift structures to make the most of candidate availability. It was a real team effort, and it paid off.

We filled nearly every role within the original window and found the final driver just a few days later. The best part? The majority of the drivers have stayed on, proving to be a great fit. The relationship with DGG has only gone from strength to strength since.

It’s a great example of how, even with tight deadlines and tricky requirements, the right approach, and the right people, can make all the difference.

If your business is facing similar staffing challenges, Bluestones Supply Chain is here to help.
From 5 May 2025, updated safety regulations will come into effect across most of Greater London, impacting any business operating or relying on HGVs over 12 tonnes. Clients working within or around the capital should ensure that their supply chain partners and fleets are fully prepared, or risk delays, fines and disruption.

Under Transport for London’s updated Direct Vision Standard (DVS), all HGVs over 12 tonnes will need to have either a minimum three-star DVS rating or be fitted with a Progressive Safe System (PSS) to continue operating in the area legally.

Vehicles that fail to meet the requirements and do not have a valid safety permit may be issued a Penalty Charge Notice of £550 per breach. This will be reduced to £275 if paid within 14 days, but repeated non-compliance could have wider commercial consequences.

The changes are part of ongoing efforts to reduce accidents involving vulnerable road users by improving what HGV drivers can see directly from their cab windows. Operators who previously applied for and were granted a grace period still need to make the required upgrades and confirm compliance by 11.59pm on Sunday 4 May.

Clients are strongly encouraged to check that any vehicles used on their behalf in Greater London are fully compliant with the new rules. Vehicles that fall short of the three-star DVS rating must be fitted with safety improvements such as blind spot cameras, sensors and audible alerts as part of the PSS.

At Bluestones Supply Chain, we’re actively supporting our clients to ensure their operations remain unaffected. If you’re unsure whether these changes could impact your business or want to understand what compliance looks like in practice, we’re here to help.

Contact us for more details or advice on how to stay compliant.

With the UK’s supply chain under constant pressure, HGV drivers need more than basic navigation – they need tools that are built around the realities of the road, the size of their vehicle, and the regulations that apply to them. While apps like Google Maps and Waze may suit car drivers, they’re not fit for purpose when it comes to professional logistics.

For HGV drivers, using the right sat nav isn’t just a matter of convenience – it’s a matter of compliance, safety and efficiency.

What’s the problem with using regular sat navs?

Mainstream navigation tools like Apple Maps, Google Maps or Waze are primarily designed for everyday drivers. They can’t factor in height restrictions, weight limits, bridge clearances or narrow roads that could easily cause a problem for HGVs.

While Waze is useful for reporting hazards and congestion, it often re-routes users down back roads and tight residential streets – something that’s completely inappropriate for larger vehicles.

Why truck-specific sat-navs make all the difference

Professional truck sat navs are built with the complexities of commercial driving in mind. They include customisable vehicle profiles that account for things like height, weight, length and load type, ensuring you only get routes that are appropriate for your specific vehicle. This avoids low bridges, restricted roads, and unsafe routes.

One of the most trusted sources for this type of navigation is TruckNavs, a supplier with over 30 years of industry experience. Their devices come with a range of features that make them invaluable for HGV drivers.

For example, truck-specific sat navs offer lane guidance, helping drivers navigate complex junctions more safely. With voice alerts for speeding and speed cameras, these systems help maintain safety and compliance. Custom routing for multi-drop deliveries ensures that drivers can plan their routes effectively, while 7–8 digit postcode recognition helps with pinpoint accuracy when navigating.

Truck sat navs also come with day/night map modes and tunnel views, making them easier to use in varying lighting conditions and complex driving situations. These features are critical for maintaining focus and navigating with confidence.

Driving time management is another key feature of truck sat navs. These systems help drivers manage their hours and remain compliant with tachograph regulations. Along with real-time updates and historical traffic routing, they help drivers avoid delays and optimise their routes, ensuring maximum efficiency and safety.

Are apps like Waze or Google Maps ever useful for HGV drivers?

While apps like Waze or Google Maps can be helpful as supplementary tools—for instance, to check real-time delays or road hazards—they should never replace a dedicated truck sat nav. These apps simply weren’t designed with the size and weight constraints of HGVs in mind, and following their guidance could put drivers in dangerous situations.

Think of these apps as sidekicks—useful, but not the main tool for the job.

What should HGV drivers look for in a sat nav?

When selecting a sat nav for professional use, drivers should prioritise truck-specific routing that accounts for vehicle dimensions and weight. Sat navs that alert drivers to speed limits tailored for HGVs are crucial for avoiding fines and maintaining safety. For complex deliveries, multi-stop planning ensures that drivers can efficiently handle multi-drop routes.

Points of interest are essential for locating truck stops, rest areas, and services along the route. Drivers should also look for systems that offer lifetime map updates and real-time traffic feeds to avoid congestion. Durability and ease of use are vital features, as HGV drivers spend long hours on the road, and the navigation system needs to withstand the demands of daily use.

Many drivers across the UK rely on TruckNavs, which offers all these features and more, alongside top-notch customer service and expert advice.

At Bluestones Supply Chain, we keep drivers moving

At Bluestones Supply Chain, we understand the importance of the right tools in maintaining efficiency and safety. That’s why we encourage HGV drivers to use truck-specific navigation systems, ensuring they stay compliant with legal requirements and make their journeys as smooth as possible.

You might have seen headlines recently about new roadside cameras that can detect drivers using their phones behind the wheel. But what’s often missed is how this technology could be a positive step forward – especially for HGV drivers who are already held to the highest standards on the road.

Smarter enforcement through AI

National Highways has begun trialling advanced camera technology that can automatically detect whether a driver is using a mobile phone or wearing a seatbelt. These high-definition cameras are mounted on gantries or vehicles and use artificial intelligence to analyse images in real-time. If a possible offence is detected, the image is passed to a human team for review and validation.

The aim is not to penalise, but to improve road safety by targeting high-risk behaviours – like distracted driving. Over the coming months, more of these cameras will be rolled out across the UK, making enforcement of existing laws more consistent and less dependent on police patrols.

Why this matters for HGV drivers

For professional drivers – especially those operating HGVs – this could be a welcome development. When you’re in control of up to a 44-tonne vehicle, you rely on every other driver around you to be focused and alert. But unfortunately, that’s not always the case. Mobile phone use behind the wheel remains a significant problem on UK roads.

By detecting distracted drivers more efficiently, this technology helps reduce risk – not just for the driver using their phone, but for everyone they share the road with. That includes the professional drivers delivering goods, keeping shelves stocked, and playing a vital role in the UK economy.

The legal risks of using a phone while driving

The law is clear: it’s illegal to use a handheld mobile phone while driving, even when stopped at traffic lights or in heavy traffic. Doing so can result in six penalty points and a £200 fine. If the case goes to court, the fine can rise to £1,000 for car drivers – or £2,500 for HGV drivers.

Importantly, “using” a phone includes scrolling through music, taking photos, checking maps, or sending messages. Simply holding the phone is enough to be considered an offence, unless you’re parked with the engine off.

Protecting those who do the job right

Most HGV drivers take road safety extremely seriously and follow the rules without fail. These new AI cameras are another tool to support that professionalism. By identifying and penalising car drivers behaving irresponsibly, they help make the roads safer for everyone – especially for those who drive for a living.

At Bluestones Supply Chain, we welcome technology that creates a safer, more accountable road environment. Our drivers and clients alike expect high standards – and rightly so. Smarter enforcement means fewer distractions on the road, fewer accidents, and a better working environment for the logistics professionals we support every day.

This is more than a crackdown – it’s a step forward.

Supporting careers across the supply chain

Bluestones Supply Chain is a market-leading recruitment specialist focused on the UK’s logistics and industrial sectors. With over 30 years of experience, we work with a wide range of clients – from family-run operations to multinational blue-chip organisations – providing temporary, contract, and permanent staffing solutions.

Whether you’re an experienced driver looking for your next assignment, a warehouse operative ready for a new challenge, or a business in need of a flexible and reliable workforce, we’re here to help.
HGV (Heavy Goods Vehicle) driving is one of the most vital roles in the UK’s logistics sector, and it offers a range of benefits, making it an attractive career option. With a high demand for drivers, job security, competitive pay, and the independence of the open road, it’s a career worth considering. As a specialist recruitment partner, Bluestones Supply Chain plays a key role in matching skilled HGV drivers with top employers, providing opportunities for growth and development in the logistics industry.

Competitive salary

One of the major advantages of an HGV driving career is the earning potential. Due to a shortage of drivers, the median hourly pay for full-time HGV drivers increased significantly, rising by 27% from 2020 to 2023 to £14.99 per hour. This is well above the National Living Wage (NLW), and for drivers with specialised skills or experience, pay can be even higher.

Specialist roles such as ADR (dangerous goods) or HIAB (mechanical lifting equipment) drivers can earn between £17 and £21.25 per hour.

Job security and demand

HGV drivers are in high demand across the UK, and this trend is expected to continue in the coming years. The logistics industry plays a crucial role in the functioning of the economy, and with an ageing workforce, there is a significant shortage of drivers, especially those under the age of 25.

According to the Road Haulage Association (RHA), by 2029, the UK will need an additional 56,000 HGV drivers. This ongoing demand means that HGV drivers enjoy excellent job security, with ample opportunities for full-time work.

Freedom and independence

HGV driving offers a level of independence that many other careers simply can’t provide. As a driver, you’ll spend most of your day on the road, with the freedom to manage your own time and schedule. From local deliveries to long-haul journeys across the UK or even Europe, no two days are the same.

Many drivers enjoy the flexibility of different shift patterns, allowing them to balance work with personal life. For those who value autonomy and the open road, HGV driving provides the perfect career choice.

Supporting the community

HGV drivers not only keep the economy running but also contribute to the safety and well-being of others on the road. With their extensive experience, many drivers take on the role of “unsung heroes,” using their knowledge to prevent accidents or assist in emergency situations.

Many employers offer additional training and support to ensure drivers are equipped to handle potentially hazardous situations, and many companies prioritise safety and community care.

Training and support

For those looking to enter the HGV driving profession, training is accessible and often fully funded by employers.
